“History of the 470 ”

More than a half century after its final historic run, the Old 470 still stands, a proud, majestic reminder of an era when steam engines ruled the railroads, linking communities town by town and state by state as they helped build a nation.
The mighty steamer, a gift to the City of Waterville from the Maine Central Railroad, has rested outside since its retirement on June 13, 1954, unprotected from harsh elements and bold vandals. As a result the Old 470, built in 1924, has begun to show its age, and for it to survive, people must step forward and lend a hand.
