Parks and Recreation

 

The Department operates based on addressing the following mission statement:

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Parks & Recreation is to:

1. Enhance the quality of life and meet the leisure needs of the community by providing a variety of quality programs for all ages and interests in sufficient, safe, well-maintained, and properly supervised facilities.

2. To serve as an information clearinghouse for recreation opportunities and special events offered within the city.

3. To provide for the planting, maintenance, and removal of trees in public streets, parkway, and municipal properties

 

The Parks and Recreation Department has a wide range of responsibilities and duties. Current responsibilities include:

a) Offering numerous recreation programs for all ages on a year-round basis. Currently over 70 separate programs are offered. Please refer to program links listed on our home page for a listing and additional information.

b) Maintaining public recreation facilities throughout the City. This includes over 80 acres of athletic fields, parks, and median & right-of-way areas. Refer to our facilities link on our home page for a complete listing.

c) Mowing and maintaining, in cooperation with the School, School Department athletic fields.

d) Serving as an information clearinghouse for recreation opportunities taking place throughout the community.

e) Receiving and processing various permit requests for activities on public property in the City (i.e. parades, road races, assemblages, carnivals, etc.).

f) Operating the North Street Alfond Municipal Pool.

g) Overseeing the operation of the City-owned Pine Ridge Golf Course. Currently the maintenance and operation of the course is leased out to PRG Inc.

h) Oversee the lease of the City-owned Jade Island Restaurant building.

i) Oversee the City's tree program including the planting, maintenance, and removal of trees on all public property, including street right-of-ways.
