Marriage License Information

Residents of the state intending to be joined in marriage shall record the notice of their intentions in the Office of the City Clerk of the municipality in which they reside.  If only one of the parties resides in the State, the parties shall file their intention in the office of the clerk of the municipality in which the resident resides.

The intentions (or worksheet) takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.  The information needed to complete the worksheet are the names, residence, place of birth, date of birth of the bride and groom, and the names and place of birth of their parents.  If either the bride or groom has been married previously, they need to bring a certified copy of the document that dissolved the former marriage.  After the couple has completed the worksheet, they must both sign in the presence of the Clerk.  The couple must pay the license fee of $40 (payable to the clerk in the municipality where they reside), which is valid for 90 days.

Certified copies of marriage certificates can be issued in the municipality in which the marriage license was obtained.  The fee is $15 for the first copy, and $6 for each additional copy of the same record.

Marriage certificates can be requested by mail by providing an application, positive identification including, but not limited to, a driver's license, passport, or other government issued picture identification.  Should you not have direct and legitimate interest in the marriage record, you must complete the Release of Vital Records Application.  Send your application and identification along with a check payable to the City of Waterville and a self addressed stamped envelope to:
