The Community Grand Opening was held on Sunday, July 12 at the garden at the North Street Recreation Area. Many community members stopped by to enjoy the fresh iced tea, lemonade, and brick-oven pizza, as well as to look at the gardens.
The Waterville Noontime Rotary Club provided a first year grant for 12 garden plots, and Fedco Seeds donated supplies to start off the gardens. Waterville Parks and Recreation helped fill the beds and will provide water to the site during the summer, as well as help with other maintenance.
The raised garden plots are 4'x8' and are filled with high grade loam. The group chose raised beds to ensure that the soil would be healthy, weeds minimal, and to make it possible to grow a large volume of vegetables and flowers in a small space. A modest fee of $10 per plot was charged to offset costs. Preference for the plot was given to Waterville residents.
