The "Are You Okay?" Program

Since 1999, the Waterville Police Department's "Are You OK?" computerized telephone reassurance program has been offering peace of mind to the family and friends who have elderly or homebound loved ones that live in the towns of Waterville, Winslow, and Oakland.

This program is a free service for senior citizens and homebound who are living independently in these towns. This program features a computerized telephone system that will make daily calls to the subscriber's home at the same time each day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Certain days of the week or dates may be skipped at the subscribers request.

If the subscriber is "OK", they will simply hang up the phone after hearing the pre-recorded message. If the subscriber does not answer the telephone or if the line is busy, the computer will make one more attempt to get through before putting out an "ALERT" report to the police dispatcher. The dispatcher will then send a police officer to the subscriber's home to determine if there is a need for medical, or other assistance. Subscribers have the option of keeping a house key with a trusted friend, relative or neighbor.

In addition to those receiving the daily and direct benefit from the "Are You OK?" program, family members and friends of the subscribers are using the program as an additional support system for filling in when they are unable to maintain contact with their loved ones.

The Waterville Police Department is one of the few Police Departments in the state of Maine that is offering this service. There is no charge for this service. If there is anyone you know that would like further information, please contact Kathleen the Chief's office at (207) 680-4700, or mail a letter to the Waterville Police Department, 1 Common Street, Waterville Maine, 04901.
