There will be a public meeting WEDNESDAY, JULY 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Quarry Road Maintenance Building, for public input regarding the next decade of plans for the Quarry Road Recreation Area. The Friends of Quarry Road have contracted with the SE Group of Burlington, VT, to update the master plan for the venue. The original planning work for the venue focused primarily on the siting of the trails, and the original trail plans have been almost completely realized. (The last major piece of trail work to be done to complete that plan is to bring Wally’s Way to the same specifications as the competition trails). We have hired SE Group to help us formulate a phased plan for the further development of the facility in ways that will maximally benefit the community. Specifically, we are looking for them to help us identify more warm-weather uses, including revenue-generating uses; to recommend ideal locations for parking areas, septic systems, etc., in order to leave room for the eventual construction of a lodge; to help us consider whether it will be possible to re-start any of the old Alpine ski operation.
Professionals from SE will come to Waterville in July to hold a public meeting at which community members will be invited to share their perspectives on the Quarry Road Recreation Area. Tentatively, that meeting is scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, July 12. People who cannot attend that meeting will be invited to complete an on-line survey. We hope that preliminary plans will be presented in late August or early September, with planning completed by November 1.
We will use the results of that plan to guide us as we continue to make capital investments in the Quarry Road Recreation Area, and it will likely become the basis of our next fundraising campaign.
