Once a year, Waterville participates in the Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Day that is organized by the Kennebec Valley Council of Governments. The Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Day is generally held on the second or third Saturday in October.
In order to participate, Waterville residents must call the Waterville Public Works office at 680-4744 to pre-register. During pre-registration, residents will be assigned a time to drop off their materials at Winslow Public Works (135 Halifax Street, Winslow).
The 2016 Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Day will be held on Saturday, October 15th. Pre-registration is required for Waterville Residents to participate. Please note, there is a $10.00 fee to participate this year.
Residents unable to participate in the collection event can dispose of household hazardous waste on their own.
There are a couple of hazardous waste collection sites that any Maine resident can use. Please note that fees do apply for using these facilities.
1. Riverside Recycling Facility (910 Riverside Street, Portland, ME) – They will accept hazardous materials the 1st Saturday of the month (April – November). Fees do apply ($6.50/gallon or $3.50/pound). For more information, please check their website at www.riversiderecycles.com or call 797-6200.
2. Maine Environmental Depot (424 River Road, Lewiston, ME) – They will accept hazardous materials the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month (May – November). Fees do apply ($28.00 per unit (5 gallons or 20 pounds)). For more information, please check their website at www.envdepot.com or call 786-7390.
