Residents of the state intending to be joined in marriage shall record the notice of their intentions in the Office of the City Clerk of the municipality in which they reside. If only one of the parties resides in the State, the parties shall file their intention in the office of the clerk of the municipality in which the resident resides.
The process for completing and processing the intentions (or marriage worksheet) takes approximately 45 minutes and must be processed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Couples who wish to expedite this process can download the intentions form and complete it before they visit City Hall (please don’t sign the form until you are in front of us!!). If either party has been married previously, a certified copy of the document that dissolved the former marriage must be provided. After the couple has completed the worksheet, they must both sign the license in the presence of the Clerk. The couple must pay the license fee of $40 (payable to the clerk in the municipality where they reside), which is valid for 90 days.
Per Maine Statute §652, Issuance of marriage license, the City Clerk’s office is required to provide both individuals filing marriage intentions with a copy of the brochure, “Plan Ahead: Give your baby a healthy start in life.” To view or print this brochure, click here.
Once the ceremony takes place and the officiant submits the completed marriage license, certified copies of marriage certificates can be issued in the municipality in which the marriage license was obtained.
