ATV, Boat, & snowmobile Registrations

Boat Registrations

All boat registrations are subject to excise tax. The amount of the tax is based on the length of the boat, the age of the boat, and the horsepower of the motor. An agent fee of $1 is also collected. Boat excise tax must be paid in the owner's town of residence regardless of where the boat is docked. Boat registrations expire each year on December 31st.

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has implemented a Lake and River Protection sticker to be issued with all boat registrations, the fee for this sticker is $20. These stickers are to be affixed to the watercraft next to the registration sticker. Current legislation makes it unlawful to operate a motorboat or personal watercraft on inland waters after January 1, 2002, without this sticker. The purpose of the sticker is to prevent the introduction of invasive aquatic plants to Maine waters and the sale of these stickers fund the prevention program.

Snowmobile registrations

Snowmobile registrations are $55 plus a $1 agent fee. Registrations expire on June 30th of each year. All snowmobiles operated in the State of Maine must be registered in the state of Maine. The State of Maine no longer has reciprocity with any other state or province on snowmobile registrations.

ATV registrations

ATV registrations are $70 plus a $5 agent fee. They expire each year on June 30th.

Private Purchases

If a boat, snowmobile, or ATV is purchased from a private person, please bring an old registration if available, the prior registration contains all the information needed to do a new registration. If an old registration is not available, please bring the ME number (registration number on the side of the boat or vehicle) and the serial numbers. A bill of sale is also required.
